Default question of survival

please help me... which one is correct to use in the following sentence.

It became a question of survival /survive/surviving with my decency from this point onwards.

the correct word is 'surviving'...but what actually do you want to say when you use the word 'decency'?

I don't know how formal or literary you wish this sentence to be. Can you quote two or three sentences leading up to this sentence?
Also, frankly, what might happen to her in this story that would mean her 'decency' didn't survive.
