Which of the following would be correct....
The spanish name for these islands is the "xxxxxx".

or

The spanish name for these islands are the "xxxxx".

The first one is correct as it relates to "spanish name"

The Spanish name is ....

or

These islands are called XY in Spanish.

In this case the verb refers to islands, which is plural.

The answer given by Snowcake is correct. The subject Spanish name being singular the verb ought to be singular (i.e. is). However this is a question related to subject-verb agreement. No correction of tense form is necessary.
