Default after vs behind

"the red book after/behind the blue one on the shelf."
what is the right way, please?
is it right that "after" refers to time while "behind" is related to space?
thanks

behind is correct in your sentence.

I'd say: not quite.

Examples for behind relating to time:

The bus was 20 minutes behind time. (the bus was late)

(also: He is completely behind the times (He is old-fashioned))

Example for after relating to location:

Our house is the next house after the library.

Hope that helps
