Default Article for American Express Card

Hi,

I don’t understand why the author chose not to use an article before ‘American Express Card’ in the first part of the following sentence. Please comment.

Suppose, for example, that I eat dinner in a restaurant, run up a $20 bill, and pay by American Express card rather than by cash. The American Express card is not money.

Thanks,

MG.

Default Re: Article for American Express Card

The writer has shown poor grammar. It should be:
"...run up a $20 bill, and pay with American Express rather than (with) cash."

OR"...run up a $20 bill, and pay with an American Express card rather than with cash."

We pay by cheque.

"Will you pay cash or by cheque?"
