There is also a term for a girl's 13th birthday in the Hispanic community, but I have forgotten it.

There are many different possibilities, but back when I was in high school, every year we elected a Homecoming Queen. The Queen was a senior (a 12th grade student), but a Princess was also elected from the lower grades (9th, 10th and 11th). What did it mean to be elected Homecoming Princess (or Queen)? Not much, other than on that particular night you got to wear a gown, get crowned and be presented on the football field in front of the crowd. That is to say, in retrospect it was no big deal, but at the time it was a badge of honor.
