Default check the ticket

Date1993TitleFatal Instinct

Expanded context: studios in London for the latest photographs of Lady Di naked in the bath. Ned and Laura push their way through the crush of REPORTERS. INT. COURTROOM - DAY Spectators pour through several turnstiles, shoving in their tokens. TV cameras have been set up to broadcast the trial. A UNIFORMED THEATER USHER escorts JURY MEMBERS in, checks their tickets, hands them programs and directs them to their seats. Ned and Laura sit at the defense table, next to Lana... who is oblivious to everything, deeply engrossed in a pocket video game. Ned looks toward the gallery and does a disturbed take. It's Lola!... sitting

But L.G. Alexander says in his RIGHT WORD WRONG WORD (TEST YOURSELF) 35 to use 'examine your ticket'.

I'd like to know if we can use both 'examine' and 'check' with the noun 'ticket' and if so, is there any difference between them?

Thank you very much.

Default Re: check the ticket

An usher would "check" the ticket to make sure it is valid. That would allow the person into the theater.

A person would examine his own ticket to find some information on the ticket. Perhaps he is looking for a number or code on the ticket so he could get a prize.

Sorry I didn't give the whole context. L.G. Alexander's sentence:

Sometimes a conductor comes around to examine your ticket, but usually you travel without interruption and can enjoy the ride.

Susiedqq, I hope you can help me further. Thank you very much.

Default Re: check the ticket

In that context, the conductor [or inspector] is examining your ticket to ensure that it is for the correct day, fare and stage on the route.
