Hi, dear experts. Could you tell if the following is good English:

"Bulgarians enjoy giving presents as much as they like receiving them. Gifts are generally exchanged at Christmas, birthdays and christenings, and generally opened when received. Delight and gratitude are expected on the part of the receiver."

Without the first clause, it sounds as if you are mentioning this as some special custom unique to Bulgaria, whereas it is common worldwide!


Gifts are

generally : what do you have in mind when using this word? It has the meaning, 'it is common to exchange gifts, but a fair number don't bother about giving gifts'. Which then seems to contradict your opening sentence.

generally : repetition


most often opened straightaway.
I'm hoping 'straightaway' is not too colloquial, because 'immediately' is too cold and formal.

Expressions of delight and gratitude are expected in return."
