Given the sentence:

"Through experience, one can find answers topainfull circumstances and not to become crazy"

Please, which one is correct?

I see I've some difficulties with gerund usage. Why not "not going" -according to what you say"- instead this "not go" you indicate. I thought gerund was good when expressing idea of activity in a general way, like eating, smoking and the like instead of to eat, to smoke.
