Smile They gulp down a caffeinated power drink

Most people consume large amounts of caffeine to keep awake. They gulp down a caffeinated power drink to stay up late.

Hi,
Does "gulp down" in the above refer to "drink quickly" or "drink a lot?"
Besides, should I use the singular 'amount" rather than "amounts?" Thanks.

Yes - it is the same as drink quickly.

In this context, "amounts" is the better construct.

Thanks, Anglika.
But why is "amounts" better? Could you explain in a few words?
