    Default was to be

    My sentence:

The wall (Hadrian's wall) WAS TO BE the northern border of the Roman Empire.

Is it appropriate to use "was to be" in that context? If not, why?

    Thanks:)

The Roman's built the wall, as it was intended as the northernmost reach of the Empire

    Thanks David! =)
Besides spelling and other terminologies, are there too many differences between American and British concerning grammar, usage and style?
Can you give me some references?
    Is ANC/BNC enough?
