A possessive pronoun is a form of possessive adjective. His, her, and their are possessive pronouns.

my book- this is the possessive adjective describing the book.
Mine is the possessive pronoun because it replaces the noun.

I agree with Tdol. Adjectives go before nouns, so 'my book'; pronouns substitute nouns, so 'that book is mine'.

TDOL is right. Her is a possessive adjective. Hers is a possessive pronoun. Similar is their and theirs. His can be either one.
