Default 'remove' the carpet

I suspect the expression 'remove the carpet' is ok, but I feel that 'remove' is a bit formal here. Am I right?

What other verb(s) could be used instead of 'remove' for the same meaning?

Many thanks

Could you provide the context so that we can see what might be an alternative?

For instance, when you move into a new house and you 'remove' the old carpet to lay a new one.

"Take up" the carpet would be quite usual.
