'remove' the carpet

I suspect the expression 'remove the carpet' is ok, but I feel that 'remove' is a bit formal here. Am I right?

What other verb(s) could be used instead of 'remove' for the same meaning?

For instance, when you move into a new house and you 'remove' the old carpet to lay a new one.

"Take up" the carpet would be quite usual.
