Default gets me

Dear teachers,

There is an excerpt from a reading matter which attracted my attention.

“It was already half-past seven in the morning and the city waking up. As I sent the car along, I could see pieces of fog floating up the street. I like to drive early in the morning. There is something about cruising in an empty cab with the fog coming up the street which gets me.”

I know that the sentence with the expression in bold (a slang) could be transformed in the following manner:

“There is something about cruising… that appeals to me.”

appeal (v) = to be attractive or interesting, as in:

The idea appeals to me.

Would you be kind enough to tell me your thoughts on the matter?

Thank you in advance for your efforts.

Regards.

V.

As you already know the meaning, I wonder what your question is?

It has a slightly stronger sense to it that merely "appeal". If something gets you emotionally, it grabs you, gives you an emotional thrill.

Hi Heidita,

To know something don’t mean indispensably “understand” it. I don’t like goods that suit every taste. I don’t make do with very little.

Regards.

Hi Anglika,

Thank you for your prompt reply as well as for your penetrating explanation. You exponded me with competence the airy notion of using the present slang.

Thank you again for your kindness.

I don't consider to get it, or something gets you "slang". It is a quite common expression.

This certailnly was a slang. Some Londoners (native speakers) say "it don't" instead of "it doesn't".

Hi Banderas,

Thank you for your active backing.

It is obvious that you understand me perfectly. You know I am self-taught a few-years English student. Very often the words in my mouth are from different sources, sometimes knowledgable somethimes not to such an extent. This accounts for the presence of so much foolish mistakes and gross blunders in my posts.

Thank you again for your Slavic love of mankind.

Regards.

V.

So it was!!

I think this slang, as you call it, is not exclusive from London, though.

(Good morning to you, banderas, how are you today??

Hello, Heidita! Good to hear from you.

No it is not, you are right. But I guess, this might be a subject for a new thread...
