Default "I'll drink to that"

Can anyone tell me how to use the phrase correctly? Does it mean in the same lines as 'hear! hear!'? Approval? Do you have to drink to use it then?

I suppose the origin of the saying was in connection with some kind of drink, but noways it can also be used as some kind of toast when somebody says something you completely agree with.

I’ll Drink To That: Politics as Pop Culture
Tasting the Web: I’ll Drink to That!

this is the normal context:

Quote:
drink to sth phrasal verb
If two or more people drink to something or someone, they hold their glasses up at the same time and then drink from them as a celebration, or to show respect or good wishes:"Here's to a prosperous future then." "I'll drink to that!"

What should we drink to?
It is common to drink "to something," in order to celebrate or honor it.

Ah, you also might want to follow this piece of advice:

Quote:
If some Russian asks you nicely do drink to something, do not try to follow them. You will crawl away and die not even half way through while the Russians are happily downing their 20th toast of the evening....

"I'll drink to that" is a common expression, said to express one's agreement with, or approval of, something somebody has said.

He: Never mind filling the gaols with murderers, they ought to pack off most lawyers to prison for how much they charge!
2nd He: I'll drink to that.

No actual drink is needed - it is a general way of saying you agree with something said.
"Hear, hear!" is a parliamentary phrase, so when used in normal conversation, it indicates agreement, and is meant in a lighthearted way, particularly if someone is making a speech.

He: I think you'll all agree that Sue made a wonderful job of organizing our office Christmas party, and she has my vote for being organizer for all our parties from now on (obviously speaker has had much punch!)
2nd He: Hear, hear!
