Repetition?

For example, "We need to buy some fruit, such as bananas, oranges, grapes, etc."

We use etc. when there are things we don't want to bother to (and don't need to) mention specifically.

It's acceptable, but redundant.

Either 'such as' or 'etc.' would be enough to point that you need to buy more than only bananas, oranges and grapes.

In formal /scientific writings the use of 'etc.' is to avoid, as it is nothing more than a filler.

Not to me. That is because of the weirdness factor. That is, it is the kind of a sentence I would never expect to see. If you have one you don't need the other, and you never see them together.
