Default gate

Hi,

could you please tell me what "gate" could mean in the following sentence about hunting:

In the gate of the Kalahari Desert due to the unusually rainy weather there´s a flood so the animals spreaded.

Thanks a lot!

Hanka

In the gate of the Kalahari Desert due to the unusually rainy weather there´s a flood so the animals spreaded.

I doubt this was written by a native speaker, and therefore, whether 'gate' is appropriate. It is suspect, since the writer states "...so the animals spreaded".

And how would you correct that part (the animals spreaded)?
