| | Proofreading request Is the following sentence grammatically correct? "As experience revealed, the success of “Voluntary Service” relies on how positive teachers and parents are in guiding their pupils to participating in other learning experiences." Heap of thanks. |

Thanks again. |

This is a problem area to me. Sometimes, I am not sure whether a "to-infinitive" or "to-gerund" should be used. By the way, do we have any online references for this?

Is this grammtically acceptable? Thanks again. |

| | Re: Proofreading request We've gone full circle, and back to
'...but 'to' in that sentence is a preposition, not part of the verb 'to participate'. Look at these sentences: Teachers instruct their pupils to behave properly.
that is, they give the order when necessary, Enough of that! Behave properly!
versus Teachers instruct their pupils in behaving properly
that is, they give lessons in decorum, and the preposition 'in' takes a verbal noun.
Teachers guide their pupils - they lead them to something. 'Something' refers to some noun, and the preposition that goes with 'guide' and 'lead' is 'to'
Guide them to the light of Minerva. - 'light' is a noun
Guide them to participating in ... - 'participating' is a verbal noun
We would need to change the sentence to: "...how positive teachers and parents are when they encourage their pupils to participate in other learning experiences."

| | Re: Proofreading request In other words, we guide/lead somebody to something/ somewhere (noun phrase/gerund), whereas we encourage somebody to do (verb) something.
Am I right? Thanks, David.
P.S. To raise such a question, I have found so much such kind of error on the net. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
