The strawberries were dropped, and still lie where they fell, on the floor. This continuing state of affairs - spilled strawberries - is expressed/implied with the present perfect tense.
However, the single act which brought this about, that actual moment of dropping the container or whatever, is over, in the past, finished. So, past tense. |
