    Default focus of ESL

    What is the ultimate goal of ESL? I understand the 4 areas (listening, speaking, reading & writing) should be developed, but what should be the ultimate objective? Is it not to be able to communicate what is in one's mind?

    I would have thought that the aim of ESL is exactly that: to learn English as a second language.
