Smile if vs. whether

hello
would you please kindly explain what is the difference between 'if' and 'whether'. which one is more/less formal, in which case either of them are used, etc.

This is a duplicate post.
I wish you would not do that!!
There has been a response to your first thread, and this causes duplication - if a native speaker can see that your query has been satisfactorily handled, then he may not respond. However, it is a waste of time to be saying the same thing as some other responder but in a duplicate thread.
