Hi, teacher,
Basically they are the same. No worries. 8)
Let me ask you some questions first.

Quote:
How is everything?
1. Is 'everything' a singular idea or a plural concept? :D
2. Based on your answer on my former question; if you choose 'sigular idea,' then what be-verb(is/are) will you choose to go with 'everything'? :)

Quote:
How are things?
1. Are 'things' a plural concept? :D
2. If yes, shouldn't it be friends with 'are'? :D

Does that help?

i appreciate your giving me immediate answer.you mean that the two sentences are nearly the same, and under different circumstances "how is everything with you "or "how are everything with you "could be used. and the same with the sentences how are things. i did not think of that before.
but could you trouble giving me some exact examples of the four sentences.
thank you

Josh: Hey there, how are things with you? :D

Pete: Everything is going fine here. How about you? :)

Josh: Well, I just had a quarrel with my girl friend. But things are looking up now. :(

Pete: I'm glad that everything is OK with you now.

hi blacknomi:
you have helped me a lot in solving the above two questions . i am glad that i am able to show the stuffs to my students. i don't know why you have so much time efforts in answering so many questions from web friends. are you a professional stuff of this website or just a netizens like us all?
of course ,i don't mean here develop friendship with you .i just want to learn more information about such things like your nationality, the university you studied in so that i can pass your information to my students without any doubt.
after all only the native english speaker can understand the language perfectly and profoundly.
could you reveal sth to me?
thank you!
rude DING.

Hi weiqun ding,

You may want to update your signature, as you know the difference between these expressions now.
And... Welcome! ;)
