Default Care to do st

Hello,

I would like to ask for help. I have come across the following expression (it is from Oscar Wild's The Canterville Ghost):

" ... we have not cared to live here" (in the Canterville Chase).

I do not quite understand whether it means that they lived there or not. Secondly, how would you explain the word "Chase"? Is it kind of a manor house or anything similar?

Thanks a lot!

"we have not cared to" = do not want to/have no desire to.

"Chase" originally meant an area in which hunting [usually of deer] took place, and became attached to hunting lodges, somewhere to stay when hunting. So eventually it became a fancy name for a largish country house.
