what is the difference between semicolon and colon?

hi. i teach students part time.
one student came to me and ask
" what's the difference between semicolon and colon?
ashamed, i didn't kown that well.
so i got back home and searched, but there weren't proper explanation.

please answer me .
and i also want to know the usage of dash(-)

i'm sorry for not having proper examples.
