Wink spelling question

Hi!
I have a question. How do you spell the space? When you are in a spelling bee and you have a compound word as: fishing rod.
Is it correct to say "space"?
And if you spell teddy-bear. Is it correct to say hyphen?

I appreciate your help.
Thanks.

Yes, you have to say "space" or "hyphen".

"fishing rod f i s h i n g space r o d fishing rod"

"teddy-bear t e d d y hyphen b e a r teddy-bear"
