considering " if " as a lexical item how can we understand it's form and functions.Kindly narrate in detail.Thanks

Hi tayyabazaidi

You need to look for how and where speakers use if . That will give youits function. Its basic form is simple: this is what it looks like <if>.

Examples
if I were you
ifs ands or buts
iffy
