Proper nouns: people's names (i.e., John), place names (i.e., Japan), and the names of things (i.e., Microsoft). For example,

Proper Noun
I asked Dad to pick me up at 5:00.

=> Dad is his name (e.g., I asked John to pick me up at 5:00).

Common nouns: another name for people (i.e., pioneer), another name for places (i.e., country), and so on. For example,

Common Noun
My dad is picking me up at 5:00.

=> dad is another name for my father.

All the best, :D
