mary-kate
Dear teachers,
I was watching a film when I heard something like "mary-kate". The context is:
Two girls were choosing clothes. When a girl was trying on one the other girl said "It's too Mary-kate". Could you please explain to me what it means?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you in advance.

I suspect it means that it's too much like the style of the Olson/Olsen [??] twins, Mary and Kate, Jiang. Google them and you'll get lots of hits.

Re: mary-kate
Hi,
I have googled them. I guess the term "like mary-kate" has a negative meaning. Is that right?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you in advance.

Re: mary-kate
It depends upon when the film was made. A few years ago, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen had their own fashion line and it featured very preppy-style clothes. Recently, though, Mary Kate has been battling anorexia nervosa and has been dressing like a frumpy bag lady.

Dear Quisch,
Thank you very much for your explanation. Now I see.
I don't know when the film was made but since the girl didn't buy the cloth it must be like a frumpy bag lady.
