Hi,

Does the word 'items' undermean electrical items?

It's because in my son's English book, there is the following question: 'Only five items appear in all frames below'. And the correct answer was: 'cell phone, radio, DVD and TV set'. There were some other drawings of a hat, a cup, a vase, a tennis racket a cap etc... which were not considered as items.

We need more context. You say "Only five items appear in all frames below" but you only tell us about 4 of the items (cell phone, radio, DVD, and TV set).

In general, the word 'items' does not pertain to only 'electrical' things. I am confused by the answer that was given in your son's English book. A hat, a cup, a vase, a tennis racket, and a cap are all items.

Furthermore, a cell phone and a DVD are not technically considered 'electrical'.

That's what surprised me. There is nothing more said in that book. So unfortunately, I can't give you any more details. You mean DVD, TV set and radio should be considered as 'electronics'? and not 'electrical'?

If I went into a store looking for a radio and television I doubt if I would find them in the 'electrical' department. They would most likely be found in the 'electronics' department. The DVD would be located either in the 'electronics' department (if you are looking for a DVD recorder/player) or in the 'DVD/Movie/Video' department (if you are looking for the actual DVD disc with the movie on it).

I'm curious! Where is the author of the English book from?

First Amigos, I'd like to thank you for your quick and helpful answer. With regard to the name of the author, I prefer not to disclose this detail because it may blight the author and the editor. I hope you understand. Actually, I've seen several unsuitable books in the area with wrong sentences and even spelling mistakes. There is a lack of qualified teachers over here. And obviously, a lack of reliable books.

The editor is from San Paulo, Brazil. Published in San Paulo, Brazil.

Thanks, bieasy. I imagine that part of the difficulty you experienced with the book is that the author (and proof-reader) probably was not a native English speaker.

The author is certainly not native English. I don't know why they don't just import some English grammar books from the USA or England. Thanks again!
