Default confusing words

Hi. I am not sure about the meaning of these word in the given contexts. Could you give me some sinonims?

1. “What’s that?” asked the waiter.
“That? “It’s a translation tes- …” The Little Translator’s chest puffed out a little.


Q: Is a "translation tes" a translation tool , like a portable dictionary?


2. Oh”, he said, in a tone which he hoped was a sufficient cross between blasé and lofty....

What about translation test ? What the Little Translator seems to be trying to do is to find a word for cafe au lait.

which he hoped was both bored and condescending
