Default How can we ask about the ordinal number in a series?

How can we ask questions about the numeric position for answers like:
It's the third house from the corner of the street.
He was third in the queue.(is this expression used only in BritishEng?)

I tought of a possible answ.: What is the numeric position of the house with respect to the corner_ - but it sounds very awkward to me.
It seems that English doesn't have very specific words for asking about that, but there must be some more natural ways of formulating the answer.
