My friend opines that the above examples illustrates that a person (I) works in association (some form of partnership in a project etc.) with the company.

My questions are

1. Is his opinion correct ?
2. What does the following example means ?

I am with (company name). I would say that this means that the person is employed directly by the company.
2. I work with (company name). This could mean that the person is working on a sort of partnership/project with the company, as your friend has said.

But my friend says the context of usage of 'with' in the first example is wrong.

His opinion is both examples convey the same meaning i.e working in association. I welcome further discussion in this regard.

I think that to say, "I am with a company" is widely used to say that one works for or represents that company. For example:
"Good morning, I am with XYZ Associates, I wonder if you have a few minutes to spare to discuss our advertising campaign"
