Default the function of the bell

Dear teachers,
Do universities and schools in North America use bell to signal 'Class begins' and 'Class is over'? As far as I know, bell is used as a fire alarm at schools and universities now. Is that right?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you in advance.

In the UK, we have different bells- the fire aarm does not sound like the class bell. Universities don't use class bells.

:D

Thank you very much for your explanation. Now I see.
I hope I could hear the two different types of sound of the bell.

Best wishes,

Jiang
