1. Do you people have any ideas what to get him? (Is this correct? If so, how come it sounds kind of awkward without the word 'about' in here?)

You don't have to use 'about', but I'm not sure you can use 'people' here nor that you can say 'what to get him'.

The error is called a comma-splice: Two sentences joined by a comma.

Notice the linking verb "is". It joins to like items,

to do = to do
to do = to re-install

Since 'to' is on both sides of the equation, the second 'to' is often deleted because it's semantically redundant: It's not needed. :wink:

to do = do

to do = to re-install
to do = re-install
