we are each...his own

2. We are each responsible for his own family.

The above sentences come from the chapter of concord of a grammar book written by a Chinese professor of English. Sentence 2 sounds odd to me. I'd like to know if native speakers would say such things.

Joham. You're right that the second option does not sound right. Obviously, 'we' and 'his' does not match, where as 'we' and 'our' does. But also to use 'his' rather points to male led families. As you can imagine, there are some families which are led by women (some would argue that they are in fact better led!)

You can't use "it" for a person.

"Each person is accountable for his/her own family".

or

"Each person is accountable for their own family".

"their own family" ? Or, "their own families"? Please.
