Default potential

I wonder if my examples are OK to mean that somebody doesn't have what it takes to do something.

1. Jim wanted to join the army but he was rejected saying he hadn't the potential/potentiality.

2. Johnson, at his first appearance, reached the US Open final, though losing 6-0 6-1 6-2 suggested he didn't have the potential/potentiality yet to win a major final. (He was physically strong but not mentally.)
