Default Gerund or Participle ?

Students go to school every day, gaining knowledge and meeting frinds.

-Gaining and meeting: gerund or participle ?

-How would the meaning differ if the comma was substituted with a semicolon ? :

Students go to school every day; gaining knowledge and meeting frinds.

participles,both of them

This sentence wouldn't make any sense at all with an additional semi-colon

hope this helps

I still need another answer to how it could differ if the comma was substituted(swapped) with a semicolon. :

Students go to school every day; gaining knowledge and meeting friends.

It's ungrammatical. Try,

Ex: Students go to school every day. They gain knowledge and meet friends.

Ex: Students go to school every day (in order) to gain knowledge and meet friends.

I'm really sorry to barge in.
How do you use semi-colon?

Thank you.

Semi-colons
do not have as many uses as colons, but they are sometimes used instead of a full-stop to balance two sentences or clauses which are closely related in meaning, such as, for example
Some people do their best work early in the morning ;
others perform best late at night.
hope this helps.
