What X Mode means is this: Use during with things and use while with actions/events, like this,
holiday (thing)
I met her during my holiday. (OK)
I was on holiday (action/event)
I met her while I was on holiday. (OK)
Please note, sometimes the action/event is left out of the sentence, like this,
I met her while I was on holiday. (OK)
I met her on holiday. (OK)
(Note, you can leave out the words 'I was')
I met her while I was eating dinner. (OK)
I met her while eating dinner. (OK)
(Note, you can leave out the words "I was")
