Hello everyone,
When I have to use "while" and when "during"?
Examples:
1a.) While the summer I stayed on a farm in Tuscany.
1b.) During the summer I stayed on a farm in Tuscany.
2a.) I learned Italian during I was there.
2b.) I learned italian while I was there.
Which of these sentence is correct and why.
I don't understand this![]()
Kind regards,
Dany

The sentences are correct, but I would just add this:Originally Posted by Dany

Here, "while" is used because a clause, which has a verb, follows it. We can use "while" this way because it is a conjunction. A conjunction joins clauses. The UsingEnglish link calls it a "verb phrase", but the result is the same.
A noun or a noun phrase follows "during", which functions as a preposition.

I met her + while + I was on holiday in Italy.
= Clause + while(conjuction) + Clause [X Mode version]
= Verb Phrase + while(conjuction) + Verb Phrase [UE's version]
Does that help? :D
