Default to assess

I try to assess my health every now and then.

Is this good sentence?

Hello Blouen,

Yes, it's fine.

"To try to do X every now and then" does not necessarily mean what it seems to mean, however. It can also imply "I like to do X, and I do it now and then"; not "I make an attempt to do X, now and then, but I do not always succeed".

Best wishes,

MrP

But when it comes to assessing my health, it wouldn't appear like that, would it?

I think you're right.

This is only my impression, and others may disagree; but if a native speaker were to tell me that he tried to assess his health every now and then, it would sound perhaps a bit odd, as if he were over-concerned about his health.

For normal usage, you might simply say "I like to keep an eye on my health".

All the best,

MrP
