the reason..
Hi,
Is there a possibility of using (of or for)besides 'why' after 'the words 'the reason...)
for example, what would you put in the following sentences:
- the reason ()the car accident remains unknown.
-the reason () the vase fell is still a mystery
- the reason () the bus crashed is still unclear..
THANKS.

FOR the car.....
WHY the vase.....
FOR the bus......
A secondary clause 'should' follow 'why'.

Re: the reason..
Hello,
Instead of using 'for', could we use 'of' in the first and the third sentence?
I would like to know if 'the reason of' is possible?
on top of that, is it possible to say 'the reason of him being ill is due to his homesick'?does it sound odd?
thanks in advance.

No ! We never say 'the reason of.......'.
There are some extremely limited uses of 'by reason of.......' but these tend to be used in academic or legal English. Please do not ask me for a rule or examples.

Re: the reason..
Not in the sentences you quote. However, look at these:
A national emergency exists by reason of the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center.
Guilty by Reason of Insanity: A Psychiatrist Explores the Minds of Killers

Re: the reason..
Is it right to consider that 'By reason of' somehow means 'by virtue of'?
thanks
