Why is it important to use English?

People in rural areas don't always need English. It doesn't help with milking cows or ploughing fields. Also, most branches of companies in rural areas usually have no need to communicate internationally -that is usually handled by the main offices in the larger cities.
You find more people want to learn other languages in larger cities where there is a need to trade and communicate with people in other countries. In most countries people learn English. This is most likely due to British colonisation and the economic success of America in modern times. Though there are always cases where another language is more useful as a medium.
There is a woman who teaches French at the Parish in which I teach English and French, and she says she hates English; she says she doesn't stand hearing English a bit because it's a simple, 'ugly' language (in comparison, I suppose, with French).Originally Posted by Anonymous
Unless she has personal reasons to have that attitude, I believe her behaviour is arrogant. There are lots of people who act the same as her, and prefer learing other 'nicer' languages, like Italian or French. I think that they have to accept the reality: English is the interational language, wether they like it or not. Olympic Games are in English (not even Greek!), the UN language is English (not even French, because of Switzerland), and international organisations often use English.
Also, there are people who prefer the BrE to AmE, or viceversa. I personally like more the former, although I've been always taught the latter. However, technology, most films and TV programmes are in AmE, so it is also useful to understand it, and think that no matter if it is a simple language, English is another language, just another code to communicate.
As simple as that.
On the flip side, there are many English speakers who expect everybody to speak English when they travel abroad, while they don't bother to learn a single word of another language. Arrogance is universal

You might say, I hate the US, because US is arrogant. If you can delete your OS from your PC, or throw away the CPU in your PC, US would be nothing for you. If you don't do so, it proves that you love US, more or less.
