| I understand in BrE one single inverted comma is prefered to two inverted commas (AmE), for example: AmE: "Helo," he said. BrE: 'Hello,' he siad. I asked a teacher about this and I was told one inverted comma was not used because it could cause confusion with the apostrophes: it's, we're, etc. But then I saw a book with dialogues written with one single inverted comma. Would you please clarify this for me! Thank you very much in advance. :wink: |

| Single inverted commas are becoming more and more common in BE; you'll see both used. I think it's because of keyboards, as single ones are easier. |
