Default Inverted Commas

Hello, I've got another little question.
I understand in BrE one single inverted comma is prefered to two inverted commas (AmE), for example:
AmE: "Helo," he said.
BrE: 'Hello,' he siad.
I asked a teacher about this and I was told one inverted comma was not used because it could cause confusion with the apostrophes: it's, we're, etc.
But then I saw a book with dialogues written with one single inverted comma.
Would you please clarify this for me! Thank you very much in advance.

Single inverted commas are becoming more and more common in BE; you'll see both used. I think it's because of keyboards, as single ones are easier.
