Default Gang Rou Xiang Ji

Hello Everyone,

Gang Rou Xiang Ji, the harmonious banlance of toughness and tenderness, roughly translated by me, originate from Zhou Yi, The law of Change and Stability, a anceint Chinese Philosophical Classics, covering all laws of the comos from micro to macro including the universe, the partical , our society, the humans and all creatures.

Gan Rou Xiang Ji tactics is advocated in managment, meaning the toughness as well as tenderness should be applied in managing. For one part, the administrator should be tough with his or her staff: if regulations, laws are broken, they should be punished and take their own responsibility accordingly, regardless whoever they are! For the other, the employess or staff should be taken good care of . Their salaries are good and enjoy high rewards if performing well! Moreover,The manager is benevolent! Staff birthday are celebrated in the unit and he or she even solve the family difficulies for them. Only through the combination, an excellent achievement can be achieved and the management and the staff can cope with each other harmoniously.

I would like to know here if there is euqivalent ajective or phrase to describe such method?

For the law of change and stability, please refer to "The law of change and stability"

Regards

Sky

Perhaps the Laws or even the First Law of Thermodynamics?

In any process, the total energy of the universe remains the same. More simply, the First Law states that energy cannot be created or destroyed; rather, the amount of energy lost in a steady state process cannot be greater than the amount of energy gained.

Hi Sky,

Here are my two cents.

Gan Rou Xiang Ji = carrot and stick policy

Hope this helps.

With regards to management, your version apparently most corresponds to its original meaning and maintains western flavors. However, as you know, Gan Rou Xiang Ji has more than one connotation. In Chinese, it can also be used to describe a person. When we say one is Gan Rou Xiang Ji, it means he or she is not only masculine but feminine. This , together with the other meaning already mentioned, has one essence in common. That is no matter a person or a method to be applied can't be extreme. Otherwise constant development will not be achieved.

I hope more versions will be given here?

Hi Sky,

I agree with you that the Chinese idiom -Gang Rou Xiang Ji has more than one connotation. Actually many English words have muti-meanings too. IMHO, it is hard to make different languages match exactly, especially there's great gap of cultural background between Mandarin and English. Translation has to adapt itself to the specific context.

Let's wait for another versions.

PS. I am neither a teacher nor a native English speaker.
