Hi,
It is possible to use both, in recent years it has become common (in the uk at least) to call a woman elected to the position of Mayor, "Mayoress". Not to be confused with "Lady Mayoress" which is the title given to the wife of the Lord Mayor of certain large cities in the UK.

Not in our town. The Mayor is a woman, and is still the Mayor. It is not deemed politically acceptable to indicate sex in these kind of titles, as can be seen with actors , authors and ballet dancers, who can be either male or female.

So mayoress would be the wife of the mayor?

Yes - it is an honorific title [she has no public standing in government]. And of course it raises all sorts of interesting problems if the mayor is a married woman - what do you call her husband?
