Default Can we omit prevailing in the sentence?

    Hello Everyone,

The following sentence is taken from my interpresting book? I would like to know what the use of prevailing is in the following sentence? It seems to me that the word here can be ignored? Does the prevailing mean being common here?

The Chinese nation always loves freedom and peace. The Chinese people have always longed for peace prevailing across the world and wish to live in harmony with the people of all the other countries.

    Regards

    Sky

The word is not especially important and can be omitted without losing much meaning. You could also say "..have always longed for lasting peace..."

Prevailing in the sentence means - existing, dominating, controlling or pervasive in the whole world.
