    To disable a device is, in a sense, to turn it off. For example, when you disable a smoke alarm, it will not go off, even when the house is on fire.

    In addition to what Gwen wrote, "disable" can be applied to people. In that sense, it usually refers to impairing a person's physical abilities. In the law, "disable" means to render someone legally disqualified.
