austerities of commodity form
"Postmodernism has brought low the intimidating austerity of high modernism with its playful, parodic ,populist spirit, and in thus aping the commodity form ,has succeeded in reinforcing the rather more crippling austerities generated by the marketplace."
Please help me find the answer of these questions:
1.What does mean austerity(ies) here ?
2. What is that "aping the commodity form" ?

Re: austerities of commodity form
It seems to me that "austerity" is in common between high modernism and marketplace, the former has intimidating one and the latter , crippling one. But I cant understand it's meaning . Is it a matter of lie and pretending or behaving like a yugi?
Re: austerities of commodity form
- the trait of great self-denial (especially refraining from worldly pleasures)

It reminds me of Dialectic of Enlightment (Adorno), where one of the main ideas is: people have to refrain from wordly pleasures (austerity as a trait of great self-denial !) for the benifit of self-preservation. So it's the area of tension between self-denial vs self-preservation people have to cope with.
I don't know what is meant by 'commodity form'.
But back to the word 'austerity': It makes sense to me that (especially because of the adjective 'crippling') it's about financial/economic restrictions. (see also google for "austerity measures")
Also, the verb 'generate' implies some kind of intention/purpose.
Just my two cents.

Aping means to mimic, copy. A commodity is bought and sold on the open market. Austerities means two things, ascetic practices; severe and rigit economy.
Re: austerities of commodity form
Does the first austerities(about high modernism) mean "ascetic practices" and the second one ,"severe and rigit economy"?

That would be my best "guess".

That would be my guess too. And I tried to make it clear in my previous post, but it seems I failed to do so. :-?
Have you tried to find a sociological or philosophical forum? You might get better results and more answers there. It's just a suggestion to avoid any frustration for you. I think most of your queries aren't about vocabulary, but about the comprehension of terms in texts, which most people here aren't familiar with.
:-)

Thank you, Soup. I wasn't sure if it is OK to give this advice because I don't wish to tread on someone's toe. ;-)
