Re: Usage of Quote Marks
Grandson of rag and bone man discovers
'Indiana Jones' gold cup may be worth £500,000
Hello!
I am a little confused by the usage of quote marks, the double quotation mark" abc" and the single quotation mark 'abc'.
Would you please tell me a bit about the usage of them ? And Can I replace ' Indiana Jones' with " Indiana Jones" ?
Thanks in advance!

Yes. In fact some people prefer them!
It is a matter of fashion and style. The double quotation mark was standard until around 1960 when the single quote began to come in. At the time it was said to be more efficient to use the single quote as you did not need to use the shift key on a typewriter, so could type quicker. Frankly, like so many things, if you are an efficient and rapid typist, it makes very little difference.
However, it has become an accepted norm, but is not an absolute. If you prefer double quotes, then use them. Your choice.
