Default 'Nam coast?

Here is a sentence written by an American:
"Several year ago, we capsized off the 'Nam coast. Soldiers pull me in, my wife and son drowned."
I cannot find the word--'Nam in the dictionary. I guess that maybe it is short for Vietnam, is it right?
And "pull me in" refers to the American soldiers pull "me" into their ship and save him, is it right?
